I just hope that the display includes cartoons that would be illegal according to the laws of some European nations, including Holocaust cartoons and racist caracatures against blacks and jews. This really is the time to promote Free Speach, with no astericks for ideas that certain people find "offensive." This should not be Free Speach for Ideas Offensive to Muslims. It **MUST** be Free Speach for Ideas Offensive to Everyone.

It's Black Thing, But You Might Understand Anyway

Over and over again we all hear the declaration that nobody can "understand" anybody else. Non-blacks "can't understand what it's like to be black," is the most famous example. Nearly always these declarations are interjected illogically into discussions that have nothing to do with one type of person "understanding what it's like" to "be" another type of person. The most common example for me is in my advancing years as I've come to believe that anti-black racism in the US has essentially been eliminated as a significant factor confronting the vast majority of blacks in their quest for a successful life. This conclusion of mine has absolutely nothing to do with my ability to "understand what it's like to be black."

In any case, though, the very claim about one type of person lacking the capacity to "understand what it's like to be" another type of person may be dubious. The world of literature is full of examples where one type of person writes about other type of person, and the work gets accepted as absolutely authentic. Here's one example where a woman has written about a male prostitute. Another famous example is the gay author of "Sex in the City." Also: "The Sopranos," written by a non-mobster. Then of course there are all the Alexander Dumas books, written by a black man, wherein all the characters are white. And there's "Knock on Any Door," written by a black man (Willard Motley), and long condsidered the quintessential novel of Italian immigrants in big city America. Furthermore, no white immigrants in late 1800s Chicago questioned the ability to "understand" of Luch Parsons, a freed black slave from Texas. Well, actually she lied to everybody and told them that she wasn't black, but rather a "Mexican" immigrant. They either believed her, or did not. In any case, she was a top leader of the original US labor movement, which comprised nearly 100% European immigrants.

So read one placcard waved by a retarded muslim at a recent London protest. Others include calls to murder:
- "Massacre those who insult Islam"
- "Behead the one who insults the prophet"
- "Be prepared for the real Holocaust"

Because these signs are not themselves meant as jokes, they violate British laws against inciting violence. I am not certain that I support such laws; I think that I believe people should be arrested and imprisoned only for committing violence, not for urging people to do so. Yet these laws exist, and would surely be enforced if British skin-heads held signs urging death for Indian and Jamacian immigrants. According to the article, police haven't made arrests for fear of instigating further violence. But I thought that British authorities do not comprimise in such circumstances. If I went to London with Nadir, and I robbed a bank, would the bobbies decline to arrest me if Nadir threated to retailiate with a bomb?

Iranian paper seeks Holocaust cartoons

I applaud this very adult response to the Muhammad cartoons. One excellent and very important point that I hope the Iranians make here is that these Holocaust cartoons -- and their president's remarks about the Holocaust not happening -- are banned as criminal acts in several European nations. As Turkish authorities continue their quest to gain membership in the EU, they face challanges for their nation's failure to meet EU standards for free speach. I hope the Turks both increase their level of free speach, and challenge the EU's acceptance of member nation's anti-speach laws. This is not the first time that I thought Iran's religious leaders advanced an intelligent thought (another thought was their President proposing that since Europeans believe that a holocaust occured, that it was enacted by a European government, and that this contributed to the justification for establishing a "Jewish state," that this state should exist in Europe, not in Arabia).

Gary Busey plays the Jewish-American doctor.

He defames American soldiers, portraying one of this nasty movie's version: evil, brutal, cold-hearted murderers. According to a summary of the "fabulous" anti-American plot of this "film", his character, Sam W. Marshall, "raids [an] Arabian wedding where everyone from the region comes together. He kills tens of people. All are civilians. Leila, the bride of the wedding, loses her future groom in the killings. Apart from the people who were murdered there, also a lot of people are declared terrorists and arrested.

As noted by reader Tim, we recall only one Muslim Arab wedding attacked in recent memory, the one in Amman, Jordan. But the attackers were NOT American soldiers. They were fellow Muslim Arabs from Al-Qaeda. Hmmmm . . . where's the Billy Zane movie about that, Hollywood?

We note that this movie also stars Syrian Muslim actor Ghassan Massoud, who was in the anti-Christian, pro-Islamist fairy tale, "Kingdom of Heaven."

Why not just cast black actors, and then treat the film without making a deal out of the racial composition?

Nadir: South Africa's leading newspaper published the cartoons. The editor's recieved death threats. She's a muslim. Since some muslims (like her) want journalists (and the rest of us) to freely express our views -- even if our expression includes cartoons of mohammad -- will you respect the views of these muslims only if they start killing their opponents? And what then? What if a new group of muslims emerges, one that considers it an "insult" for any human to impose islam on other humans, and uses violence to enforce publication of mohammad cartoons? Then were does your logic lead us?

European newspapers have chosen to start a religious war by antagonizing millions of people over some bullshit. Insulting an entire religion is not a defensible aspect of free speech. Perhaps free speech gives one the right to be hateful and racist, but that doesn't make it right, and as I warned, the consequences will be even more severe.

These cartoons have succeeded in galvanizing even moderate Muslims who were not active in protests against Westerners. The Western attitude that "we can do or say anything we want to anyone we want because we are superior" is one of the largest sources of death and destruction on the planet. This is the basis for Western imperialism, it was the basis for European race slavery, and it is the basis for the rest of the world's animosity against Europeans and those of European ancestry.

To everyone who holds this view, I answer - and this is very important, so I’ll be stating it again below - that I agree with you. I agree that the Koran says what you claim it says. Here’s a comparison I find useful:

When the Abu Ghraib photos appeared, every American with a microphone - columnist, politician, religious leader - condemned the soldiers responsible.

When radical Muslims hide among civilians so that our soldiers can’t fight them without killing the innocent - do Arab and Muslim leaders, politicians, journalists unite to call such behavior cowardly and un-Islamic? No. When radical Muslims murder women and children? No. Gang-rapes in Scandinavia, forced mass starvation in Sudan - the list is long and wretched, and the men who commit these actions receive no criticism from the only people they might listen to: their religious leaders.

That’s why I wrote this song.

Again, if you say that Islam doesn’t permit such deeds, and that the men who perform them aren’t behaving like true Muslims, I’ll agree with you. But these men consider themselves true Muslims, the only true Muslims, and think that Muslims who disagree with them are apostates, the worst of betrayers.

I stand by every line in the song; it’s what such men believe. All I did was make their beliefs rhyme, scan and bounce like a vaudeville tune.

To those of you who feel that I’m mocking Islam, I reply: I’m not. I respect your view of it. These men - the men I’m writing about - don’t. You should be arguing with them, not with me.

Democracy in a Cartoon

No, the west needs no lectures on the superior virtue of societies who keep their women in subjection, cut off their clitorises, stone them to death for alleged adultery, throw acid on their faces, or deny the human rights of those considered to belong to lower castes."

Against Tax-Funded Sports Stadiums

Tom and Nadir: Can you guys join me in opposing govt involvement in the construction of professional sports stadiums? Notice one of the claims made here: "the results of studies on changes in the economy resulting from the presence of stadiums, arenas and sports teams show no positive economic impact." And this fact: "out that of $20 billion spent in the 20th century on stadiums, $14.7 billion came from government subsidies." I consider tax funding of entertainment venues to be inappropriate, perhaps even unconstitutional. Imagine if officials had used the $14.7 billion to renovate parks and streets, or to build rail systems... or even simply left this money in the hands of citizens, for them to decide how to spend. Sports team owners only demand tax funding because voters appease these demands. Does anybody doubt that if voters stopped approving these expendatures, that team owners would build these monstrocities anyway?

Milk Cartel Challanged by Small Raw Dairy

Tom and Nadir: Surely you guys support me on this issue. A Republican congressman has introduced a bill that increased dairy regulation. This of course is a violation of official republican promotion of smaller government. Here we have a government-established dairy cartel, and republican officials helping it to prevent consumers from having more market choice. Tom, as a fellow food snob (and Nadir, as a near-snob), you will be especially interested to learn that the dairy maverick here produces beloved raw milk. I am especially upset at yet another example of republicans violating their supposed advocacy of free markets and small govt. But of course we can be sure that plenty of demos will support this anti-market, big govt bill.

Cuts in Tax Rates Cause Increase in Tax Rev

Oddly, Nadir agrees that cutting property tax rates in Philidelphia resulted in increases to home property values, and thus increases in tax revenue (a smaller fraction of a larger pie represents a bigger piece of a pie vs. a larger fraction of a smaller pie). Yet he does not believe that congress's passages of Bush's proposed cutting of tax rates "on the rich" resulted in growth of federal tax revenue. Here's one of the charts showing that federal tax revenue increased following the Bush reduction of tax rates. An earlier post on this issue showed that despite this increase in tax revenue, federal spending increased by even more, resulting in the growth of federal deficit. Repealing the Bush tax cut, as Nadir and other leftists have called for, will surely result in a reduction in tax revenues. Demanding instead a reduction in federal spending (including if you like an eradication of the Iraq war spending) would contribute to reducing the federal defict; raising tax rates will not!

Finally, a voice of freedom rises from the muslim world. A Jordanian publication has printed the cartoons!

"What brings more prejudice against Islam, these caricatures or pictures of a hostage-taker slashing the throat of his victim in front of the cameras or a suicide bomber who blows himself up during a wedding ceremony in Amman?" wrote Jihad Momani.

He told the AFP news service he decided to publish the offending cartoons "so people know what they are protesting about... People are attacking drawings that they have not even seen."

Capitol Police Ignore Sheehan's Right to Free Speech; Arrest Her at State of Union

Sheehan, who won wide attention with an anti-war vigil outside Bush's Texas ranch, was attending the speech as the guest of Rep. Lynn Woolsey, a California Democrat.

In a speech on the House floor, Woolsey said Sheehan wore a shirt that highlighted the number of dead U.S. soldiers in Iraq. "Since when is free speech conditional on whether you agree with the president of the United States?" Woolsey asked.

NBC Ignores Its Right to Free Speech; Chooses NOT to Offend Christians

A conservative advocacy group is taking some of the credit for NBC's decision to cancel its new television series, "The Book of Daniel."

The American Family Association (AFA) called for a boycott of the "anti-Christian program," even before the first episode aired.

The main character, Daniel Webster, is a drug-addicted Episcopal priest who regularly speaks with an unconventional, white-robed Jesus. Webster's family includes a homosexual Republican son; a drug-dealing daughter; and an adopted son who is sleeping with the bishop's daughter.

According to AFA, "NBC didn't want to eat their economic losses" after a number of sponsors dropped the program.

German Papers Print Mohammed Cartoons

Don’t look now, but backbones seem to be springing up all over Europe:

Germans print Muhammad caricatures.

Two German newspapers on Wednesday reproduced controversial drawings depicting the Prophet Muhammad, with one of them arguing that a “right to blasphemy” was anchored in democratic freedoms.

The drawings were among several published in a Danish paper in September that sparked outrage and boycotts in Islamic countries. The pictures were also shown in a Norwegian magazine last week. ...

But the German Welt daily put one of the drawings showing the prophet’s turban transformed into a bomb on its front page on Wednesday. It said the picture was “harmless” and expressed regret that the Danish Jyllands-Posten daily had apologized for causing offense.

“Democracy is the institutionalized form of freedom of expression,” the paper said in a front-page commentary. “There is no right to protection from satire in the West; there is a right to blasphemy.”

The Berliner Zeitung daily also printed two of the caricatures as part of its coverage of the controversy.

Italy and Spain too:

Newspapers across Europe have reprinted caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad to show support for a Danish paper whose cartoons have sparked Muslim outrage.

France Soir, Germany’s Die Welt, La Stampa in Italy and El Periodico in Spain all carried some of the drawings.

In the US, meanwhile, a diversified economy premised on free markets means that whichever way the oil market goes, the overall economy benefits. In the case of higher petro prices, US petro companies see their fixed profit margins yeild increased income, which will result in upgrading to better exploration and production equipment, and further exploration. When this inevitably leads to lower petro prices, other portions of the US economy will see their own profit margins yeild higher incomes. No wonder so many poor people in Venequala immigrate to the US... and never migrate back!

Are the residents of Ladera Heights, in Los Angeles, "racist"? Ladera Heights is dominated by wealthy people living in spacious homes near Los Angeles. It shares a public school system with neiboring Inglewood, which is dominated by poor blacks and mestizos. The school district is awful, and the Ladera Heights residents mostly have their kids in private schools. They would rather their tax dollars fund an excellent public school that they would be happy to send their children to. They do not believe that this is possible in conjunction with the Inglewood residents.

Nadir: Are you certain that the Ladera Heights residents are racist? Is it possible that they don't care about the "race" of their children's classmates? Is it possible that their single motivation is get their own kids into excellent schools, and that they have given up on their attempts to do so with Inglewood parents, and that their conclusion is devoid of any racial descrimination?

Schools Discriminate (against boys?)

Girls are doing better than boys in school. They are getting higher GPAs and standardized test scores, graduating at higher rates, attending college at higher rates, and less likely to get diagnosed with learning disabilities or cited with discipline problems. THEREFORE: Schools are discriminating against boys, right? It can't possibly be true that boys just aren't getting the job done, and that they collectively need to do a better job. Right? Clearly teachers are DISCRIMINATING, and universities need to create AFFIRMATIVE ACTION programs available only to boys, to get their numbers up. Right?

Afterall, these same FACTS charactorize black students compared to whites. (But wait! They also charactorize white students compare to Asian...)

Rich Get Richer, Poor Get Poorer? (Oh, really?)

Twenty years ago I was a very broke college student. One semester I was homeless, sleeping in university stairwells, my car, and friends' sofas. Today I have two new-bought cars (one given to my daughter in college), a colonial suburban house, and an income that is about 1,400% greater (not adjusted for inflation) than my early undergraduate years. Twenty years ago government statistics placed me in the bottom 20%; now they place me somewhere in the upper 30% or so in terms of income. But according to the study discussed in this commentary, incomes of "the lowest 20%" only increased in this time by about 20% (adjusted for inflation). Did my metioric rise help elevate that figure? No; the statistics for "the lowest 20%" only counted my income for the time that I belonged to that catagory. Once my income increased past the "lowest 20%" threshhold, I stopped contributing to the figures for that catagory.

So what do these figures truly mean? That -- adjusted for inflation -- people living in the USA's lower 20% income level today are doing better than when I resided in there.

Protesters Sue for Speech Spot

Organizers planning a protest during President Bush's State of the Union address next week say they have been denied a permit to hold the demonstration around the US Capitol Reflecting Pool because that area has been reclassified as part of the security perimeter for the day of the speech.

The organizers of the Tuesday protest, called "World Can't Wait - Drive Out the Bush Regime," say the National Park Service and the US Capitol Police initially offered them the Capitol Reflecting Pool as a demonstration site but changed their minds.

Travis Morales, one of the organizers of the demonstration, said the restrictions effectively deny the protesters a meaningful public space to gather as a group. The nearest place to meet together, he said, is Seventh Street, about a mile from the Capitol.

"We are being told that turf renovation and security trump our First Amendment right to protest," he said.
