And at least one also fought for the Union. I wonder for what reason this cracker ancestor of his fought for the Union. Was he one of the many honkies who fought to end what he considered the evil of slavery? Or did he merely wish to "preserve the union" (the dumbest reason)? Or to prevent slavery from expanding into -- and consequently ruining the economy of -- new territories (a pretty dumb reason)?
And what of Obama's black Kenyan daddy? Did any of that guy's ancestors enslave, rape, rob, or culturally subjugate anybody? Certainly so!
We all descend from the victims and perpetrators of slavery, murder, rape, pillage, theft, and cultural robbery and subjugation. Frankie Beverley is correct: We are one.

The media is reporting these incidents as if there should be some embarrassment for either Obama or Sharpton over this. If anything America as a whole should be embarrassed by its own history. From the newspapers that supported the institution to the companies that profited from its unpaid labor force.
And if the United States is truly humiliated by its mistreatment of our African ancestors, then it should pay reparations to the Black folks who still have to deal with the nation’s racist past and present.
Check out this post on LastChocolateCity.com.
I agree that the media are reporting this like it should embarrass people. I do find this information fascinating, though of course I wish it contained the entire story, which includes the characterization of black people as real humans, rather than eternal, flawless victims.
I think that Americans should be ashamed of some apsects of their nation's history, but also very proud of other aspects. I also think that Africans should have these same mixed feelings about their history. Also American Indians and Asians, including Arabs and Indians.
Then all modern governments can pay and receive reparations from each other.
Steve: I have modified the text below to conform to my standards, and I appreciate your contribution. I omitted what I consider to be personal accusations against me. From UptownSteve:

"We all descend from the victims and perpetrators of slavery, murder,
rape, pillage, theft, and cultural robbery and subjugation."
The flaw in
your argument is that whites continued to murder, rape, enslave and rob
cultures in the nation they claimed was created to be a land of freedom
and the pursuit of happiness and liberty. In many ways, the oppression
and inhumanity that was sanctioned by the American government until a
mere 40 years ago rivaled anything that existed on the planet over the
last few centuries."Frankie Beverley is right.
"We Are one" is one of my favorite
tunes.
Black labor created
America's foundation of wealth.Blacks have fought and died in every war
America has been involved in, well before we were recognized as human
beings.Native Americans were slaughtered, had their ancestral lands
stolen and were consigned to virtual concentration camps.NO, we are not
ONE.There is no equivalence in the amount of cruelty, pain and
inhumanity issued by whites toward non-whites in this, the richest and
most prosperous land in the history of the world, which we ALL helped
to build.I realize that it's difficult for someone of a certain mindset
to accept. Many whites feel that they did blacks a favor bringing us
here as slaves. You don't accept what was TAKEN FROM US.Or what we
eagerly GAVE while being dehumanized.
I've raised my sons to
understand that this country is OURS. We built it. Our ancestors died
for it in battle when they didn't even have citizenship rights. We
produced the cash crops that created provided America's first economic
foundation and imports to the world.WE built America's first cities. The
European immigrants jumped off of our shoulders and advanced on the
tabel that we set.America wouldn't be what or where it is without black
people.Yet we have NOT gotten a return on we have invested.
I agree with most of Steve's post. This country indeed belongs to his sons. And to all other citizens.
I agree that his black ancestors built the US. So did Steve's white ancestors. Some of Steve's black and white ancestors were horrible people who caused more pain on this earth than they did joy. Some of Steve's black and white ancestors were rapists, and some were rape victims.
I agree that in the Americas since honkies arrived, they have committed more atrocities than non-white people.
But I wonder why Steve seems to make such positive comments as he does about blacks only about non-whites, and such negative comments as he does about whites only about whites. Steve, do you believe that white people are worse than black people? Do you believe that white people have some genetic predisposition to the commission of horrible acts?
Wow, Hue actually posted a piece of my comments!
That's progress, I guess.
"But I wonder why Steve seems to make such positive comments as he does about blacks only about non-whites, and such negative comments as he does about whites only about whites."
Obviously because whites of your mindset seem to believe that only the contributions of whites have made this country the economic and global power it currently is without recognizing that America's wealth and power was founded on the enslavement, oppression and genocide of non-white people.
"Steve, do you believe that white people are worse than black people? Do you believe that white people have some genetic predisposition to the commission of horrible acts?"
These are the type of questions that I find totally offensive coming from someone who spends a lot of his time asserting that there is some unique "black pathology" or "black cultural failure".
NO, I don't believe that whites are more genetically or culturally predisposed to violence or inhumanity than any other race.
I KNOW that over the last couple of centuries that whites have committed more horrible and genocidal acts against non-whites than vice versa while simultaneously claiming some moral superiority as well as perpetuating the power gained from those actions.
I also realize that certain whites ant to attribute racial differences in wealth, status and education to genetics and "culture" (which is just code for race) while disregarding the ugly facts of slavery, colonization, Jim Crow and endemic discrimination.
STILL WE RISE!!!
In the last 40 years since the demise of Jim Crow, the black poverty rate has transformed from 65% to 21%.
60% of the black community in America is middle class or higher.
Blacks are at the CENTER of American culture.
We influence language, dress, art, music, style, politics...you name it.
It is VILE that the American mainstream media continues to focus on depraved ghettoes and urban crime as the face of black America.
Black people, AS WE ALWAYS HAVE, continue to thrive and achieve in a country that has never been committed to our well being.
Yet we STILL love America.
What a people.
