I predict a swell of support for Imus from black folks. Here Earl Ofari Hutchinson talks what I consider to be good sense. I just got a phone call from a nappy-headed female (at least she was when I left her this morning) incensed by all the rage against Imus, whom she watches every morning; I sure hope that she and Nadir will cross swords on this topic in my presence, while I sit back and enjoy a nice stout.
I also hope some national commentator will recognize that Imus also called the other black team "cute"; why doesn't this constitute a blanket endorsement of the physical appearance of all black women?

Yo Paul,
I've already posted this question on Nadir's blog and told him that I would post it on yours.
So if you decide to block it, you can't use the excuse that it didn't conform to your "decency standards".
LOL!!!
But Paul, how do you square your stance about us "hypersensitive black babies" toughening up and stop trying to get people fired for offensive language with blocking me from your blog simply because you don't like what I have to say?
Six: If you post a comment on Nadir's blog and I block it from mine, I don't understand how that would invalidate my claim that the comment violated my standards of comport.
As to your point about me supposedly advocating free speech, but rejecting some of your comments:
I am rejecting some of your comments from my own blog, which I manage. I am not attempting, nor would I attempt, to have Nadir's blog shut down due to posting the comments that I block from my blog. If I did, that would qualify me for my own definition of a cry-baby: requiring the shut-down of media outlets present views that I find offensive.
I consider you to be a hypersensitive crybaby because you not only get "offended" by Imus' comments, you want to shut him down, or in some way prevent him from issuing comments that "offend" you.
Nadir: Andrew wants to come over to my house tonight to drink beer and watch the Pistons while discussing this issue. He wants to invite you to join us. My nappy-headed baby mama will be there at some point. Of we hope that your wife comes, but I fear that you guys are both out-of-town. If true, I will pray with all my might that when you guys return that we can drink beer and commisserate on this topic. Perhaps at some point the Scrabble board can make an appearance; Nicole is riding high after beating me the other night.
Paul,
You are not answering my question.
If you are an advocate of free speech and you abhor political correctness, why are you blocking my posts?
I've posted this one on Nadir's as well so he can see that I am not being profane or uncivil.
I will continue this practice (if you don't mind Nadir) until you, Paul Hue, cease to censor me arbitrarily, or admit that you are being grossly inconsistent on the issue of speech.
We are in town. I'll mention it to the missus, and see if she is interested. I'm sure we would both be thrilled to beat your ass... at Scrabble that is.
Uptown Steve: Are you in town? Do you play Scrabble and drink beer?
Methinks you're in the DC area. Perhaps a conference call is in order.
"I also hope some national commentator will recognize that Imus also called the other black team "cute"; why doesn't this constitute a blanket endorsement of the physical appearance of all black women?"
As I've stated before (and I'm an international commentator) Imus's attack was personal. It doesn't constitute a blanket endorsement because in the same breath he called the other team nappy-headed hoes and jiggaboos.
Be for real.
Steve:
1. Nadir's acceptance of your posts rejected by me does not constitute absolute evidence that your posts conform to absolute standards of comport; and even if it did, posts to my blog must conform only to my own standards of comport. By the way, I am a big fan of profanity (in the classic sense of the word), so I urge you to submit profane comments.
2. My position towards your postings would only violate my support for Don Imus, Ward Churchill, Bill Mahr, and Kramer if I started trying to shut-down Nadir's blog for accepting posts that I have rejected, or if I started insisting that Don Imus and the others give me time in their forums to say whatever I want. In the meantime my position is consistent: me, Nadir, Don Imus, Bill Mahr, and you should use our forums to say whatever we want, and to reject whatever views we want, without anybody trying to punish us for our content.
Nadir: Imus made two types of personal comments towards the two teams of black women. One he called "cute" and "wannabees" (quoting Spike Lee), the other he called "nappy headed hos" (quoting various black folks in popular culture), "jigaboos" (quoting Spike Lee), and look-alikes for various NBA teams.
If the insults negate the compliment, why doesn't the compliment negate the insults?
nadir
I am in DC. My office is in Lanham, MD actually.
I haven't played Scrabble in years but I've drank beer as recently as last night.
The issue with Imus goes way deeper than his slur against the Rutgers team.
The man and his studio flunkies, particularly Bernard McGuirk, just don't like black folk.
I'm 44 and grew up in NYC. I remember when Imus was a disc Jockey and used the intro to "Soul Makoosa" and various James Brown grunts and screams as the lead in on his top 40 music show.
Remember "Mama So, Maku Ma, Maku Makoosa"?
Imus' listeners would as much listen to Afro-Caribeean music during the 70s as the man in the moon.
But the intro was very jungle sounding with the chants and conga drums and Imus always got a big laugh out of it.
He's called Oprah Winfrey and Bryant Gumbel "racists".
Black people all over America are having a big laugh about that one.
Paul

So just what are your "standards of comport"?
" In the meantime my position is consistent: me, Nadir, Don Imus, Bill Mahr, and you should use our forums to say whatever we want, and to reject whatever views we want, without anybody trying to punish us for our content."
George Orwell is turning over in his grave.
My rules of comport are fluid, but include:
- No comments that I deem to be personal insults of contributers to the blog.
- No calling anybody "racists" or "sellouts" or other words of my choosing, without providing what I consider to be justification for such charges.
- No comments that I consider to constitute excessive "meta discussions"; discussions about discussions.
- Anything else that I deem to constitute turn-offs to the sorts of people whom I want to attract to this blog, according to my mood, how much I've had to drink, how much sleep I've had, and my changing characterizations about the sorts of people I want to read, which includes: people who use facts and logic to advance views on matters of politics, history, and society, and who tolerate such views from others even if they disagree with their own views.
Nadir: We can use Andrew's mac laptop to setup a phone conference with Steve.

This writer gets it right equating Imus' comments with those of black rappers, and wondering why the people who want to fire Imus don't also want to fire those who play the rappers.
But she exposes her own false assumptions, and ignorance of the Imus show, by declaring that Imus would already been fired had he said similar things about white girls or gays.
paul,
Why the obsession with rappers?
I just rented the dvd of the Academy Award winning movie "The Departed" and watched it last night.
The "n" word and the "c" word that demeans women was used promiscuously as it is in much of American cinema.
Will you apply your same outrage at hiphop towards the movies?
If not, why not?
I think that to be consistent, you, Nadir, Sharpton, and Obama should insist on the firing and banning of all people who use this language, including Martin Scorsesee, theater owners, and Snoop Doggy Dog. I am the only one consistent here: toleration for all, which by definition includes those who say things that "offend" us.
I don't believe rappers or movie directors should be censored.
There is such a thing as artistic expression and I am free not purchase music or tickets to movies which offend me.
However, on a NEWS PROGRAM on the public airways which are regulated by the SCC, racial hate will not be tolerated.
What part of this are you struggling with?
