Sunni bloc rejects Baghdad vote

The three main Sunni Arab parties that make up the Iraqi Accord Front said the election in Baghdad had been rigged and demanded that Iraq's electoral commission order a new vote.

Imagine that... accusations of voter fraud in a U.S. run election?

Yeah, imagine that.

What, Nadir, where people voting without ID cards? Did the election officials not require ID cards? Were parties paying people to go vote?

I agree that the US needs election reforms, though most of the reforms are opposed by the democrats. At any rate, reading the article it looks like the about 80% of the votes went to Shiite candidates in a nation of 80% Shiites, and that about 20% of the votes when to the complaining Sunni candidates, in a nation of 20% Sunnis. In addition, candidates that had US government support seem to have failed.

Did you have any objections to the elections held under Hussein?

Freedom House just upgraded Iraq's democracy standing:

I will be shocked if an independant analysis doesn't demonstrate that Iraq has gained more ground than any nation in history in advancing towards democracy in four years.

Of course. Hussein was a dictator and tyrant. Elections that violate international law imposed by an occupying military force, however, are not better.

Nadir: You don't think that these recent Iraqi elections are better than the Hussein elections? Strange, in a nation that's 60% Shiite that the Shiite candidates got about 60% of the vote. Under Hussein, what fraction of the vote did Shiite candidates get? What about Kurd?
