Good news for those of us who want US military and intelligence personel to stop torturing people: the senate just passed a law superceding all presedential orders in this matter. Here's a commentary on the blog of Andrew Sullivan, a reformed leftist and unreformed queer:

Sullivan is right no this one. This political move by the Senate is better late than never. Will the bill pass in the more conservative House?
I am absolute and adamant in banashing torture from the US. Yes, this even means no torturing even of a person that you are 100% certain has chopped off your buddy's head. *THIS* is "the price of freedom": refusing to behave that way. And such refusal only has true meaning if it applies to the most tempting circumstances. There is only one hope for ensuring against the torture of innocent people, and that is to ban all torture.
I believe that the Bushies must accept responsibility for the turture that has taken place, and that their failure to make its abolition a top priority is contributing to failure in the war effort.
I hope you express your outrage vociferously when the president YOU elected vetoes that bill.
I will be profoundly angry if he vetoes this, and hope that congress has enough votes to override a veto.
