LONDON - British authorities said Thursday they had thwarted a terrorist plot to simultaneously blow up several aircraft heading to the U.S. using explosives smuggled in carry-on luggage. British Airways canceled all flights between London's Heathrow airport and all points in Britain, Europe and Libya for the day.

The Home Secretary John Reid said the "main players" were in custody but cautioned against complacency.

Very evil people? Oooohh, that's awfully strong language. We just need to "understand" them and why they hate us.

You'll get no argument from me that Western imperialism and hegemony has created many potential enemies. Unfortunately, we haven't learned our lesson yet.
With no change in foreign policy in sight, it's bound to get worse before it gets better...

Muslims don't want you to live under shariya law anymore than Christians want you to live by the ten commandments.
The foreign policy of blowing innocent people up by the thousands. Any would be terrorists will believe the dozen or so they get are just a drop in the bucket in comparison.
Six: I think that it is possible that if the US pulled all troops from the muslim world, and eliminated support for Isreal, that the muslim KKKers would settle for a Muslim empire that excluded the European portions of the original muslim empire. I'm unsure if they would settle for different countries within this region having sperate national boundries, and if they'd settle some ruled by shia versus sunni clerics. I'm unsure if they'd accept a democracy in Lebanon, but I'm pretty sure that with the entire region to play with, they'd probably leave existing free societies alone, no longer able to blame them as much for their own problems. Fifty or so years of this would prove what you and I already believe, that repressive societies based on religious dictatorships leads as much to poverty as does the current various unfree govts in these nations. Under this circumstance popular support may indeed develop in favor of modern civilization; one may say that this was happening in Iran, and that clashes with pro-democracy advocates in DC have upended that growing trend.
Nadir: If you think that muslims are no more likely than christians to live under a theocracy, you are just nuts. The christian religious leaders in the west -- the Pope, Fallwell, etc. -- do not want to force anybody to practice their ancient superstitions, except in the most minor ways, such as outlawing abortion and gay marriage. They don't want to imprison or beat people for not praying, or praying via the wrong edicts.
Muslim nuts: Govt executions of women who have sex outside of marriage, beat women for exposing their ankles, ban women from voting, driving cars, traveling freely.
Christian nuts: Ban women from having abortions, but punishing only the doctor, not the woman.
Muslim nuts: Govt ban on non-muslim religious practices and indeed force all people to practice Islam under penalty of death; govt executions for people who blaspheme; govt banashment of all non-muslim literature and jail time for those caught with such; no non-muslim churches; no democratic process.
Christian nuts: Permission of teachers and students in public schools to pray in accordance with any religion, or not pray at all, and to display religious symbols for any religion; usually these people do favor jail terms for people who burn their own American flags; democratic process.
Approximate fraction of people in the US/Europe who are Christian nuts: 15%/1%
Approximate fraction of people in Muslim countrries who are Muslim nuts: 50%
Approximate fraction of Presidents/PMs in US/Europe who are Christian nuts: 5% (Bush only)
Approximate fraction of national leaders in Muslim countries who are Muslim nuts: 90% (excluding Lebanon and Iraq only)
Even if we through Isreal into this picture, we have close to 100% religious toleration, and a majority of voters and politicians there who do not want to impose Jewish customs on everybody else. Muslims and Christians in Isreal are free to leave, but their migration out is nearly 0%, and they have more political rights than anywhere in Arabia except for recently in Iraq and Lebenon.
I don't understand how anybody can believe that Islam and Christainity are identical in the nuttiness of their nuts, or the popularity of nuttiness.
