"My Faith is a Mess"

Nadir: What do you think of Irshad Manji? She's an Arab Muslim who's view of Islam 100% coincides with that of me and Six, the same view that you have vehemently criticized as disrespecting and misunderstanding Islam. I saw her last night on Bill Mahr. I wouuld marry her, except I already have a lot on my plate, and she's a lesbian. Six, she wrote a book, "The Trouble with Islam." She totally supports the cartoonists and their editors, and lumps the violent rampagers with the Jim Crowers.

I've seen her on some talk show before (Colbert? Mahr last season?), and she seemed like she knew her stuff.

I remember that I didn't agree with her on every point. I believe it was her support for the invasion of Iraq that was disagreeable to me.

Certainly not all Muslims agree with each other just as all Christians don't agree (hence denominations) and all Republicans don't agree on every issue. This is a result of human intellect.

I was taught that questioning was considered to be a virtue in Islam. I was found that this was not the case in practice, and this is one of the reasons that I am no longer a Muslim.

In the end, many people of all religions want to be told what to do and how to think. They also want to tell others how to live their lives. I have problems with this as does Manji.

Nadir: I'm sure you realize that all Muslims, Repos, etc don't agree with each other. But in the past you have ascribed the view that Six and I have about Islam to our misunderstanding of Islam. Here I show that some people whom you surely agree "understand" Islam share our view. Thus our critical view does not neccessarily stem from our ignorance, but rather represents one valid view. Right?

Furthermore, the view of muslims like Manji presents a delema for you, since on the one hand we have rioting, murdering, arsoning bands of Muslims demanding that nobody publish cartoons of Mohammad, and on the other hand we have calm, intellectual, respectful Muslims like her encouraging the cartoonists and their publishers. Whom should we please? Whom should we displease? You, Bill O'Reilly, Fox News, and the Bush administration have urged non-publication, which greatly displeases muslims like Manji.

Can she get y'all's respect only if she riots, murders, and arsons on behalf of demanding publication?

A small group of us have a bi-Weekly live Internet chat show about Islam. This weekend (Satuday 15th, 9PM GMT) our episode will be entitled "Why I left Islam." We will be talking to people about what led them to apostatise.

If I am not mistaken you are an ex-Muslim aren't you? It would be great if you could join us on the day via Skype to let people know your reasons for apostatising. The show is watched by people of all religious inclinations, our aim is to encourage people to investigate Islam in a rational and objective way and I think hearing you talk could encourage that.

I hope you will accept my invitation. I look forward to hearing from you.
