The 'Kweisi Problem'

As Democrats elsewhere rub their hands in anticipation of congressional gains in the midterm elections, Democrats in Maryland are gloomily contemplating a scenario in which they may lose a U.S. Senate seat they've held for 30 years.

And that scenario has a name: Kweisi Mfume.

I disagree with Demos who claim that they support the cracker over Mfume because in the race against the black repo, Mfume's youthful crimes will work against him. Do these demos really think this? I can't explain why white demos so rarely promote black candidates or officials, except in black-majority districts. Are they racist? Or do they merely believe (incorrectly) that the general white population is racist, and whereas a white democrat will automatically get 90% of the black vote, the general white population is more liketly to vote for a white demo than a black demo?

The repos are very smart to start promoting black candidates and officials. The whites who are repulsed by Mfume are not repulsed by his so-called race. They are repulsed by his leftist positions. They will support a black repo as solidly as they would support a white repo. These new elections will show that republican voters want their candidates to support small govt and free markets, not candidates who have white skin. The pressure will be on the democrat side, where 90% of black folks do *NOT* support leftist policies, and vote agains their beliefs due to a myth that "republicans are racist". Black candidates on the repo side will not cause the repos to lose white votes, and won't win any white demos. But they may convinces a good chunk of black folks who want low taxes, school vouchers, etc. to vote their priciples, due to a diminished belief that "repos are racist."

Mfume's candidacy may even help this, as he correctly points out that the demos rarely promote blacks. This is the "pro-black" party? After Mfume helps get out that criticism, even if he wins the demo nomination, blacks who want small govt, low taxes, etc., will see a choice between two blacks, and some may decide to vote for the one who supports their views. If Mfume loses the nomination, he would have helped more of these issue-conservative blacks to be more willing to reject the liberal honkey party, and give a black repo man a chance.

I agree with everything you said except, "90% of black folks do *NOT* support leftist policies, and vote agains their beliefs due to a myth that "republicans are racist".

That's not true. Most blacks support more leftist views than the Democrats even push. Many of those people don't vote.

Most of your bourgeois black friends would probably fit your description above, but they are still the minority among blacks. However, the Democrats don't appreciate them, so they may just become Republicans soon as you predict.

Nadir: I accidently wrote my "90%" statement unclearly. I did not intend to mean that "90% oppose leftist policies". What I meant was that whereas 90% of black folks vote for the more leftist party, the fraction of blacks who support leftist views is significantly lower than this 90%. I agree with you that a majority of blacks support leftist views. A more accurate reflection of black views would be perhaps a 70% black vote for the democrats, which would constitute a revolution in modern US electorate politics.

The democrats cannot appeal to our bourgeois black friends on the issues, because these blacks have conservative views. Only the republicans can appeal to them on the issues. You think that "appealing to blacks" means steepening what you call a "progressive tax structure", expanding affirmative action, "slavery reparations", transfering subburban taxes to "inner city" schools, etc.

These measures would repulse conservative blacks; only racial politics keeps conservative blacks voting democrat. Your favored measures for the dems will only appeal to the blacks who are already voting democrat, by changing their voting frowns to voting smiles.
