The wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and now, possibly, Iran are not the result of personality quirks. They are part of a decades-long drive by right-wing forces within the U.S. to overturn what they call the Vietnam Syndrome.
They believe the U.S. lost Viet Nam because unreasonable, liberal and weak-kneed politicians refused to let the military do its job. In the context of overcoming this Syndrome, the nuclear option against Iran makes perfect sense.

Nadir: What if Isreal's PM starts proclaiming that Iraq must be driven into the gulf, and that it would eventually be "eliminated"? And if Isreali protestors outside of the Iranian embassy in NY held placcards with a mushroom cloud over Ira, and the words, "The Next Holocuast"? What would you say then about Iran striking Isreal with a nuke?
I agree that the advocates of the post911 invasions believed that the US lost Vietnam due to political constraints.
I even agree that Bush might have headed off Iran's aggressive nuclear talk with a diplomatic offensive designed to strengthen Iranian democrats.
Iran doesn't have any nukes. If they are trying to develop nukes it is only because of the fear of the US and Israel, as Iran has never attacked another country.
